In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, you can now be arrested for feeding the homeless in an outside area. A 90 year old WWII vet named Arnold Abbott was arrested for feeding the homeless, something he has been doing for the past 20 years. His arrest was because of a new ordinance in Fort Lauderdale that banned public food sharing. Abbott and two others were sentenced to 60 days in jail and a fine of $500. "One of the police officers said, 'Drop that plate right now,' as if I were carrying a weapon," said Abbott.
This is not the first time Fort Lauderdale has tried to stop Abbott from feeding the homeless. In 1999 they tried to stop him, and in response Abbott filed a lawsuit against the city that he won. He will again fight this and sue the city. "I'm trying to work with the city. Any human has the right to help his fellow man." said Abbott.
In my opinion this ordinance that Fort Lauderdale has passed is ridiculous. For one it is not neutral, it specifically is focused agents those who are feeding the homeless. It requires anyone who want to feed the public to do so in private, meaning everyone must have a private place to do the feeding. This can be an expensive thing to try and do. Secondly, how can a city pass an ordinance that prohibits people from helping their fellow man? It to me is terrible thing to do and I wish Abbott the best of luck and success in fighting this ordinance.
